Weddings in Scotland
Your Love. Your Story. Your Ceremony.
Your wedding ceremony should be more than something you simply have to do. It should be one of the moments you remember.
As an Officiant with the Spiritualists’ National Union (SNU), based in Edinburgh, I am authorised to solemnise marriages in Scotland. This means I can conduct your wedding ceremony and legally marry you as part of one meaningful, personal celebration.
But being legally married doesn't mean your ceremony has to feel formal, impersonal or like someone else's wedding. I believe your ceremony should reflect the two of you—your personalities, your beliefs, your story and the life you are choosing to build together.
Whether you dream of something romantic and intimate, spiritual and meaningful, traditional with a personal touch, or relaxed and filled with laughter, we can create a ceremony that genuinely feels like yours.
Legally Married in Scotland
One of the wonderful things about getting married in Scotland is the freedom couples have to make their ceremony personal. As an authorised SNU Officiant, I can solemnise your marriage in Scotland, incorporating the necessary legal declarations naturally within the ceremony we create together. That means your legal marriage and your personal wedding ceremony can take place as one occasion, rather than having a separate legal ceremony followed by a symbolic celebration. And Scotland gives us some rather beautiful possibilities for where that occasion might be.
An Edinburgh hotel or historic venue. A Scottish castle. A country house. A garden. Somewhere in the Highlands. Or perhaps somewhere outdoors with a landscape that means something special to you. Wherever you choose, the important thing is what happens when you get there.
A Ceremony Written Around You
No two couples have quite the same story. I’ll take time to get to know you both—how you met, what first attracted you to one another, the adventures you've shared, the challenges you've overcome and those little things about each other that nobody else quite understands. Those conversations help me create a ceremony that isn't simply about marriage.
It's about your marriage. There can be laughter and emotion, stories and memories, beautiful words and wonderfully unexpected moments. Most importantly, when you hear your ceremony on your wedding day, I want you to recognise yourselves within it.
Your Vows
Your vows are your promises to one another, so they should sound like you. You may wish to use traditional vows, write completely personal vows, or have some help finding the words for everything you want to say. I'll work with you to create vows that feel comfortable, sincere and meaningful. They don't have to be perfect. They just have to be true.
Spirituality
As an SNU Officiant and Spiritualist, spirituality is naturally part of who I am—but your wedding ceremony is also about your beliefs. For couples who share a spiritual outlook, we can incorporate Spiritualist philosophy, blessings, prayers, readings or reflections on love and the spiritual journey through life. For others, a simple acknowledgement of something greater than ourselves may feel right. As an SNU Officiant, I conduct your marriage within the Spiritualist tradition, but your ceremony should still reflect who you are as a couple—your personalities, your values, your story and the commitment you are making to one another
And for couples who don't consider themselves particularly spiritual at all, the emphasis can simply be on love, commitment, family and the life you are creating together. I will never impose beliefs upon your ceremony. Instead, we'll find the balance that feels right for both of you.
Remembering Someone Special
Weddings are joyful occasions, but they can also make us especially aware of the people we wish could have been there to share them. A parent, grandparent, sibling, friend or someone else whose absence is particularly felt. If you would like, we can create a gentle moment within your ceremony to acknowledge and remember those who are no longer physically with us. It doesn't have to make the occasion sad. It can simply be a beautiful recognition that the people who helped shape our lives remain part of our story.
Bringing Your Families Together
Marriage is often about more than two people. Children, parents, grandparents and close friends can all play a meaningful part in the ceremony if you would like them to. We can incorporate readings, music, family blessings or symbolic moments, and for couples bringing families together, we can create something especially for children or other family members. There are no unnecessary rules about what your ceremony should look like. We create what feels right for you.
Edinburgh Weddings & Weddings Across Scotland
I am based in Edinburgh and can conduct weddings throughout Scotland. From the heart of Edinburgh to the coast, countryside, castles and landscapes beyond the city, Scotland offers extraordinary places in which to make your promises to one another. Whether you're planning a large celebration surrounded by family and friends or an intimate ceremony with only a handful of people present, the same care goes into making the ceremony personal to you.
From Our First Conversation to “I Do”
Planning a wedding involves a lot of decisions. Your ceremony shouldn't feel like another problem to solve. We'll talk, I'll listen, we'll exchange ideas and gradually create something that feels right. I'll guide you through the ceremony, help with vows and readings, discuss who you would like involved and make sure you understand what will happen on the day. Then, when your wedding day arrives, I'll be there to lead you through it with warmth, professionalism and, where appropriate, a little humour. Your only job at that point is to enjoy it.
